The objective of each level is simply to locate the way out room that leads to the next area, usually marked with an exit sign or a special kind of door, while surviving all hazards on the way. The path of the doors were filled the hindrances like monsters, radioactive slime, ceilings, pits of toxic that can crash the player. The doors are delinked with the keycard that are skull-shaped key device or remote switches that need to be searched by the player. If the players locate these hidden keys, they get the powers ups as a reward.

Doom is game of weapons, the player is armed with a pistol, but larger weapons can be picked up during the later stages. In addition these are a variety of powers up like the backpack that increases the player ammunition-carrying capacity, armor, first aid kits to restore health, the berserk pack.
Different versions of Doom including furtive levels, which are accessible by the player discovering alternate exits, are difficult to reach. In a few versions of Doom II both of these secret levels incorporate level design and characters from Doom's precursor.
